02 · Understanding Steel Grade Standards
The same steel can carry four different names depending on which standard system you use. Here is how each one is structured.
🇨🇳 GB/T — ChinaQ235B = Q (yield) + 235 MPa + B (quality class). Q355B, Q345R (R = vessel). Stainless uses element formula: 06Cr19Ni10 = 0.06%C · 19%Cr · 10%Ni. |
🇺🇸 ASTM / API — USAA36 = general structural carbon steel, 36 ksi yield. A572 Gr.50 = high-strength low-alloy, 50 ksi. A653 = hot-dip galvanized. API 5L X70 = line pipe, 70 ksi min yield. |
🇯🇵 JIS — JapanSS400 = structural steel, 400 MPa tensile. SPHC / SPCC = hot / cold commercial. SUS304 = stainless. SGCC = galvanized commercial quality. Widely accepted in Gulf & Southeast Asia. |
🇪🇺 EN — EuropeS235JR = structural, 235 MPa yield, J = impact 27 J, R = room temperature. S355J2 = 355 MPa, impact at −20 °C. DC01–DC04 = cold forming quality. W.Nr. 1.4301 = 304. |
03 · How to Choose the Right Grade
A simple decision path used by our engineers every day.
|
STEP 1
Define the loadStatic structure → Q235B / A36. Heavy load or long span → Q355B / S355 / A572 Gr.50. |
STEP 2
Check the environmentDry indoor → carbon steel. Humid/coastal → GI or GL. Acid/chloride → stainless 316L, 2205, 904L. |
STEP 3
Consider formingBending & deep drawing → DC01–DC04, SPCC, low-carbon. Welding-heavy → lower C & CE grade. |
STEP 4
Confirm the standardTell us the standard your engineer requires — we cross-match the equivalent grade and confirm before production. |
04 · Steel Terminology Explained
The terms you will see on almost every steel quotation and shipping document.
HRC / CRCHot Rolled Coil / Cold Rolled Coil. HR has a scaled grey surface and lower cost; CR is smooth, thinner and more formable. |
GI / GL / PPGI / PPGLGalvanized, Al-Zinc coated, pre-painted galvanized, pre-painted Al-Zinc. Each step adds one more layer of corrosion protection. |
Mill Edge vs. Slit EdgeMill edge keeps the original rolled edge (cheaper, slight width deviation); slit edge is trimmed square for precise width. |
Pickling & OilingAcid pickling removes mill scale; oiling prevents rust during sea transport, usually applied to HR coils. |
MTC / EN 10204 3.1Mill Test Certificate issued by the manufacturer with actual test results — the core quality document for export. |
Tolerance & CrownTolerance = permitted deviation from nominal size. Crown = slight thickness variation across coil width, critical for precision stamping. |
05 · From Enquiry to Delivery
A typical export order timeline — most shipments leave port within 15–25 days of deposit.
| Stage | What Happens | Typical Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Enquiry | You send grade, size, quantity and destination port | — |
| 2. Quotation | Technical confirmation + price, delivery and payment terms | Within 24 hours |
| 3. Contract | PI / sales contract signed, deposit (T/T or L/C) received | 1–3 days |
| 4. Production | Rolling / slitting / coating, in-line inspection, MTC issued | 10–20 days |
| 5. Inspection | Photos, dimensions, third-party inspection if required | 1–3 days |
| 6. Shipping | Booking, loading, B/L and full document set released | 3–7 days |
| 7. After-sales | Delivery tracking, claim handling, repeat-order support | Ongoing |
